Starting Out

As you've seen from the photo Judith posted on Facebook, you know that I bought a motorcycle, a 2011 Suzuki TU250x, that I am learning to ride. That I bought it on my 62nd birthday could easily lead you to think that this was done on a whim. The whim may be part of it, but not all of it. I could rehearse the logical reasons for the purchase such as high gas mileage, less use of the car, and so on, but we would all recognize that such reasons are mere rationalizations--the sort all of us use to justify all sorts of actions.
This isn't my first two-wheeled motorized vehicle. The first as an orange Vespa Rally four-speed that I rode during the mid-70s and early 80s. She was a two-stroke, four-speed that could top out at 60 if the wind were right and I tucked in. She had a kick-start with a headlight that ran off the alternator so when I stopped at an intersection, it dimmed to a dull glow. She took me through most of Marshall County and Jackson County, Indiana, and one memorable drive from Plymouth to West Lafayette. That drive left my hands tingling for two days. I reluctantly left her behind as a payment for a debt owed.
If you want to think my current bike is an attempt to regain younger days, so be it. I won't argue much at this point. However, that isn't the only reason. Those other reasons I will explore in future blogs along with stories of this adventure.
